Welcome, due to COViD, I am only taking online sessions. You can read through the results below, and the online methods are also showing positive results, using researched methods. Thank You, Peter J. Meilahn, LPCC.

Hello,

My clients can change or stop anxiety, ADHD, autism, or pain symptoms using techniques proven to be as effective as medication. Clients control music or movie volume with their calm attention in a process called neurofeedback and biofeedback during counseling with mindfulness. It is a fast, interesting type of mindfulness therapy for kids and adults.

I work with clients in my offices in St. Louis Park and Duluth, and I work with clients online. All clients can use online brain testing to tell them how well their memory, attention, focus, and flexibility are doing, and we use these tests to track progress and guide our sessions. The tests we use are used in hospitals and clinics around the world. I accept most major insurances (including Medical Assistance, BlueCross, UCare, HealthPartners, Medica, Cigna, PreferredOne, and others).

People remember how they control their brain and body rhythms the same way they remember how to balance and ride a bike. The skills learned with biofeedback have been proven to stay at least seven years after the process. I have years of experience and education as an individual and family therapist, and in behavior therapy for autism.

Neurofeedback and biofeedback are supported by research and insurance companies. Clients can use either neurofeedback equipment or biofeedback at home or in the office.

Neurofeedback and Biofeedback are supported by The American Academy of Pediatrics and The Dept. of Health and Human Services for being as effective as medication for things like anxiety and ADHD. You can read more about researched results for anxiety, autism, ADHD, pain, migraines, insomnia, and other struggles in a list below.  I have been a teacher at The University of Minnesota Medical Center and elsewhere.

I meet with clients for a first session, to experience how it works, and to see how their brain profile is.  We can talk about what they need and want to achieve. Most struggles like anxiety, ADHD, migraines, and pain need around 20-30 sessions to see significant improvement. Conditions like autism and epilepsy need more sessions.

The process to start is simple. In the first few sessions clients get tools that they can use on their own at home and with guidance during the sessions.

Here is a list of successes many clients see. These are also proven in research studies. Here are some examples of what can be helped:

  • Attention is improved because people learn to make more relaxed or more focused attention. The American Academy of Pediatrics endorses it as a treatment for ADHD. It also works for performance and astronauts use it in training along with musicians and Olympic athletes.

  • Autism symptoms are reduced because people increase the inner awareness of soft skills and attention management. Impulsive behavior and tantrums are reduced by as much as 70% after sessions. Repeated practice can change overall development. And, these results are also shown to be true in research studies of people using biofeedback for autism. Research shows an improvement in grades by around 24%, and a reduction in difficult classroom behavior by 50% or more. I also see these results.

  • Anxiety is reduced because people learn to quiet their mind. Clients have gone from sleeping 4-5 hours a night to 8 hours a night in weeks, and have eliminated panic attacks after having them twice a week. Also, general anxiety and chronic stress are healed as people increase their "relaxation" response that they learn to do more on purpose.

  • Trauma is healed as people learn to "put things away" and let go more easily. The VA hospitals developed the first trauma therapies with biofeedback that healed trauma and personalities.

  • Pain is reduced and clients learn to stop and reduce pain feelings in their brains. Clients reduce pain by 50% or more and it stays down for days after biofeedback. I have seen clients with chronic pain from serious accidents have pain go from a 6-0 or 8-2 in 40 minutes and stay down for days.

  • Migraine sufferers can learn to reduce the brain behavior leading to them and reduce or avoid migraines. There is a 50% reduction in migraines (on average). People can also learn to back away from migraines completely in some cases.

  • Alcohol and chemical abuse recovery happens because people learn to make the positive feelings they want on their own. Biofeedback has been proven to prevent relapse into alcohol abuse with a 80% success rate for at least one year after treatment. This is proven in research done in VA hospitals.

  • Traumatic brain injuries are helped significantly. People experience tingling in their brains as blood flow is healed, and new nerve connections are made to repair damage. Clients report more concentration, lower anxiety, and improvements with other things. The methods are well researched.

My goal is to help clients gain more mental and emotional control and freedom for more well-being. I have been a guest speaker and teacher to clinicians or families at conferences from The University of Minnesota Medical Center, The Learning Disability Association of MN, The Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented, Hazelden, and various county agencies.

If you would like to sign up to begin services, please go to the Schedule an Appointment button on this page (it is below on phone, and in the upper right on computers). I am glad to help, and feel fortunate to be able to do this work with people.

     Thank You for Your Time,

Like a doctor's visit, we start with helpful tools you can use right away, and your insurance will be billed for the first session. If you are not using insurance, the fee is $90/session.

I have been a clinical teacher to clinicians from:

The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Hazelden, The Learning Disability Association of Minnesota, The State of Minnesota Department of Health and Human Services, and various county agencies for autism services.

  • As we move along the process we start to process lifestyle or challenges that we will shift with understanding and skill.

  • The client has music, movies, or visuals that change depending on how they are doing.

  • The client adjusts what they are doing when different things come up, and we do counseling and coaching to identify and learn to strengthen abilities that the client already has. We also work on how to apply it in everyday life.

  • All this is guided by research, and it has been shown to be successful in hundreds of studies for many different conditions. You can see some of the results in the page about that is for results for the different treatments I use.

I have been a speaker for annual conferences held by:

The Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented, The Learning Disability Association of Minnesota,  Minnesota Association of Community Mental Health Programs
